Alone, the national charity supporting older people across Ireland, asked us to create a film that would quietly reveal the impact of its befriending service. Rather than explaining the programme in abstract terms, the goal was to show what a real visit actually looks like. The result was The Visit, a short film built around the genuine friendship between a volunteer befriender and a 90-year-old man named Tom.
Before filming, we spent time getting to know Tom and understanding the rhythm of his daily life. He spoke about losing his wife and the quieter pace that followed, and about the small routines that now fill his days. Those early conversations shaped the film. On the shoot day, we followed Tom as he moved through his home, writing at his desk, looking through photographs of his late wife, and occasionally glancing toward the window or front door in anticipation of the day’s highlight: the arrival of his befriender.
When the visit finally begins, the film settles into the warmth of their interaction. The camera observes rather than directs. Conversation flows naturally as they sit together and pass the time in the way they always do. By working with a real friendship rather than actors, the film captures a quiet authenticity that could never be scripted.
The production approach blended documentary sensitivity with a cinematic visual language. We kept the crew presence minimal so Tom and his befriender could behave exactly as they normally would, allowing moments to unfold organically. At the same time, careful cinematography and pacing gave the film a gentle, reflective tone that elevates everyday moments into something deeply affecting.
The Visit ultimately shows the extraordinary value of something very simple: a knock on the door and time spent together. By grounding the story in Tom’s real experience, the film offers an honest glimpse into how companionship can transform an ordinary day into something meaningful.
