Liam's Story
Over the past two years, we have worked closely with Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine to document the human stories behind a new generation of blood cancer treatments. As therapies such as CAR-T and Tecvayli (teclistamab) begin to transform patient outcomes, the goal was to create a body of work that captured both the medical expertise behind these breakthroughs and the lived experiences of the people whose lives they are changing.
Rather than approaching the project as a single film, the brief evolved into a long-term storytelling initiative. We met with healthcare practitioners responsible for administering these therapies alongside patients who had undergone treatment themselves. The focus was simple and direct. Honest conversations about diagnosis, treatment, and recovery were paired with quiet glimpses into everyday life. Patients speaking from their own homes. Moments of normality returning. The small but powerful details that show what extended time and improved health can mean.
Production was handled with particular sensitivity. Many of the contributors were sharing deeply personal experiences while continuing their own recovery journeys. To ensure a respectful environment, the crew was kept intentionally small and the filming process designed to feel natural and unobtrusive. This approach helped build genuine trust with the people we were documenting. Instead of feeling like a clinical interview or a traditional broadcast shoot, the experience became a conversation.
Over time, this approach allowed us to build a substantial archive of material. Some of the filming took place long before the final narratives were defined. Patients, clinicians, and everyday moments were captured with the understanding that these stories would later form a broader library of content Johnson & Johnson could draw from as the treatments continued to evolve. In recent months, that archive has been shaped into structured films that communicate the progress being made in this field.
The result is a collection of work grounded in humanity rather than technology. By focusing on the people behind the medicine, the films reveal what progress in cancer treatment really looks like. Not only in clinical terms, but in the quiet return of everyday life.
