Method and Madness is one of the most distinctive spirits to come out of Ireland’s modern distilling movement, known for pushing beyond traditional whiskey into bold, experimental territory. For the launch of their micro-distilled Irish gin, the brief was to create a film that felt as crafted and intriguing as the spirit itself. The result was a studio-shot launch piece designed to highlight the character of the gin through texture, light, and detail.
The visual approach centred on macro cinematography and carefully controlled reflections. Using mirrored surfaces and a reflective table setup, we built a clean, sculptural environment where the bottle and glassware could catch and bend light in striking ways. Stereo tubes were positioned behind the glass elements to illuminate the liquid and contours of the bottle, creating luminous highlights that gave the product a sense of depth and presence.
One of the most distinctive elements came from an entirely in-camera technique. By modifying the optics of our macro setup, we were able to shape the bokeh in the frame so that every out-of-focus highlight subtly carried the Method and Madness logo. The effect is barely noticeable at first glance, but once seen it becomes a quiet signature throughout the film. Alongside this, we captured a series of tight macro shots of the gin’s botanicals and fruits, revealing textures and colours that hinted at the flavour profile behind the spirit.
In post-production, these images were refined with bespoke motion graphics and subtle visual effects. Ingredient titles such as Irish gorse flower and black lemon were integrated into the visuals in a way that complemented the cinematography rather than competing with it. Every graphic element was designed specifically for this film, giving the final piece a cohesive, crafted feel.
The launch film went on to become a prominent part of the brand’s in-store presence, appearing extensively in retail displays including a major campaign in the Dublin Airport duty-free area. It was a project that balanced precision studio craft with playful visual ideas, resulting in a film that captured the spirit of Method and Madness in both name and execution.
